From the Inside Flap

Vitaly Friedman, Editor-in-Chief, Smashing Magazine: "With this book, Chris introduces a much-needed strategic approach to progressive, bulletproof web design. From the inception of a project to its final release, this book will help you understand the versatile intricacies of the design process, identify common stumbling blocks, and create the solutions your clients need." Aaron Kenedi, Editor-in-Chief, Print Magazine: "No one is thinking more clearly or more intelligently about designing for the web right now than Chris Butler. And now, with his new book The Strategic Web Designer, no one is writing more clearly about it either. As always, Chris employs his trademark conversational approach to present some big ideas about planning, optimizing, and designing your site, and offers valuable tips on what trends to look for on the horizon. All of which will make you not only a better web designer but smarter about the web in general." David Sherwin, author of Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills and Success by Design: The Essential Business Reference for Designers: "Christopher Butler has created a concise, poetic guide about to how to be strategic about your website work, from planning to prototyping, from measurement to mobile. There are countless resources out there that tell you how to design for the web. But this is one of the few that will help you think critically about how to do it better, and what the future of the web might hold for your practice." David C. Baker, Recourses: "What strikes me about Chris' book is that he's like a zoom lens. He can see the wide picture and place it in the context of marketing historically, and then zoom right in to how that might impact how any given business would optimize their "pull" strategies to attract the right kind of clients. His writing is clear, buttressed with research and examples, and drags you in to read the whole book at once."

A refreshingly different read on the background planning that should go into every website building project. Developers tend to get into a very narrow focus of "we do it because we can" that can lead to cost overruns and an inappropriate product for the client. Taking a step back to see the big picture, and possibly seeing things from the client's perspective, should help every developer better websites. A nice addition to the well-rounded developer's bookshelf (and yes, I recommend the paper version - it will help you slow down and really absorb these ideas).

As a principal at a small web design and marketing agency (for nearly the past 20 years) I have spent countless hours pouring over websites, white papers, webinars and the like to gain insight into other agencies and developers process for approaching web projects. Although my agency has our own development process, I am always open to new ideas and approaches for the delivery of our projects. That being said, I've been a fan of Chris Butler's content and blog writing for quite sometime and was generally enthused to see him author a book on a subject he has written countless articles about. Knowing that his agency incorporates live prototyping and are heavily content focused I was eager to get a hold of his new piece. The Strategic Web Designer, gives a great overview of a proven development process, with enough detail for seasoned professionals to walk away with new insight and certainly a great asset to those new to website development or those who work in other agency roles and need a better understanding of how online projects should be approached. While I have read more detailed books on site development, Chris' book takes a conversational tone, that he's known for, and breaks the process down into manageable phases. And the chapters on content and SEO are spot on.I highly recommend The Strategic Web Designer to professionals involved in any stage of the web design/development process.

I subscribe to a lot of Graphic Design and Web Design mags and almost all of them have had to put their two cents on this book. So, I decided to give it a go and give my two cents. For those starting out in the industry as a freelance or even someone who is a little bit stuck or lacking in their own roadmap will find this book handy to address a few key points. Although, I would say some of these things are more "consider this" points, but a lot of it is practical.I gave this book four stars because I am spoiled by other books I have purchased and think the paper contents used in printing this could have been better. I also like my illustrations in color, but the information inside is good. Thanks HOW Magazine.

It looks like it will be I formative. It's a gift. It came in mole time for giving as a gif.

I am a Web Development Specialist and work for a national Marketing Solutions company. I spend most of my days speaking with clients, forming strategies and creating website proposals to achieve their goals. The book overall was a decent book and provided a different point of view on some topics. However I found a lot of the information a bit elementary for someone like myself. If you are familiar with SEO basics, HCI concepts (developing personas, usability testing), website prototyping, responsive design and the pitfalls of mobile apps, I doubt you will find much value from this book.I loved the Content chapter, as I share the author's sentiments debunking the theory "Content is King", while agreeing that quality content can provide value when necessary. There is also a nice section on analyzing GA bounce rates that I found interesting when comparing the different numbers.I felt that the last chapter was just filler content, an attempt to extend what was already a short book.If you are new to web design and some of the newer popular technologies and strategies, this book will be helpful to you. However, if you are in the trenches, keeping up with trends and are familiar with the subjects listed above, I doubt this book will teach you much.

Chris is a very smart young man and he communicates clearly and effectively with this book. My company has been stuck in prehistoric times building static non-responsive websites, coming up with wireframes and designs in one meeting (that ended up being very poor) or just copying and pasting another web firm's site and giving it a color redress (hello copyright infringements!) Because of the advice laid out in Chris' book I have effectively steered my time to use a more user-based and efficient approach to web design. Unfortunately I didn't get the big promotion I deserved but I know I am well-equipped to manage a web design team if I had to :) Grab this along with Steve Keurig's book "Don't Make Me Think"
