I think the writer took too much time up front explaining what the book is and what it's purpose is. It felt a bit self indulgent--instead of drawing the reader in with some wonderful adventure, it comes across as someone (perhaps a bit pompous?) talking about how this visit affected him/her. Readers need to be engaged right away or lose interest. The author needs to step right into the presence, describe the scenery and areas with all the senses so the reader can take the adventure too. This book sounded like a textbook. The voice of the reader was awesome however. He was easy to understand, has a nice tone, and read with emphasis and style. Too bad the book didn't get off on better footing.
For a guide book on the Basque country, this is extremely light on reference to oooh, the Basque country.There were pages and pages of lists of flora, fauna, the regions of Spain, topography and history of Spain that bored me witless.What I was hoping for was some history of the basque area, descriptions of the region and towns. It just took too long to get there.
This book has plenty of history and information on Spain, in general, with good descriptions and details in each chapter. The Basque specific chapters are much later in the book than I expected, however, the information is thorough. The narrator's voice is smooth and his pronunciation and inflection made the book easy to listen to.
This book contains minimal information on the Basque Country, much if it general and easily obtained from other sources. The long sections on wildlife, when to go, where to go, history, etc. cover the entire country and far too general for anyone who has been to Spain. Unfortunately the text is not well written either. Save your $7.
