The first line draws readers’ attention to the “hollow of a tree, higher than the eye can see…” where a mother wood duck waits for her 10 ducklings to hatch. The excitement builds as the last one finally emerges from the smallest egg. “Mama glides to the ground below, into the pond” and counts as each of her offspring jumps, flops, flaps, and dives, following her lead. Scared Duckling Ten needs some extra coaching to overcome his fear of leaping. When he succeeds, he is congratulated by his siblings as they paddle about in their new home. The rhyming, counting, and repetition of “peep” make this ideal for sharing aloud. Lively watercolor and colored pencil illustrations are done in warm browns, blues, and greens, and generous white space accentuates the drama of each bold leap. An author’s note that explains why this family happened to be in a tree in the first place is a welcome addition and will no doubt appeal to young naturalists. Peep Leap is a delightful addition to the genre of non-fiction picture books. Picture books are the heart of the literature experience for young children (ages 4-7) and this book beautifully presents informational text with captivating, supportive illustrations. As a former primary teacher and principal,I would definitely recommend this book to enhance many facets of the curriculum. Natural science is brought to life as one learns about the unusual hatching rituals of wood ducks. Rhyming in the text quietly and effectively supports the sounds of language. The concept of counting (1-10)reinforces early math skills and draws the child into the reading experience.No child can resist chiming-in as Mama duck says, "Try again. Count down from ten." 10,9,8,7,6..... Numerals and their shapes are clearly presented right along with the new ducklings. Elizabeth Verdick is to be commended for capturing the emotions of fear and courage in a way that is easily understood by children. Her "Author's Note" supports the adult reader in background knowledge that will ultimately transfer to better understanding for the child. Her words are informative, clear and chosen with great care. John Bendall-Brunello's illustrations are extremely appealing to children. There is a vibrant relationship between the text and the illustrations. This book merits a prominent place in school libraries and classroom collections. I will look forward to more creations from this team!Jennifer Kay
The kids I read this book with really enjoyed this story, and so did I! It's fun to root for the last little wood duck to jump from the tree. Peep Leap is also a great counting book, disguised as an engaging and humorous story (seems like so many counting books lack a story). Finally, I love it when a book teaches me something new, and this one certainly did. Before reading this book we didn't know that wood ducks had to jump from such high places when they were so young, so of course this book led us to the internet to find out even more. Peep Leap is a great example of how much one little picture book can entertain and educate.
Got this for the ipad and read it to my 3.5 year old grandson. Besides being a sweet story, there are some lessons here: birds hatch from eggs, the appearance of male/female mallards, depiction of webbed feet, bravery and courage, family.However, to the best of my knowledge, mallards do not nest in trees. Maybe they are not mallards but another duck.
You know how a picture book looks and feels when all the pieces come together perfectly? That's what I found with Peep Leap. The author took especial care to select just the right language - lovely, lyrical - to express this story. And the illustration capture the essence of the story exactly. My husband and I are birdwatchers, so I was excited to find this book for our pre-schooler. The rhyming text is catchy, and the book's illustrations and story line are realistic representatations of wood ducks. Our daughter enjoys the story, but she is also learning about birds. Also, I have had a hard time finding good children's books for Kindle Paperwhite. The actual size and the graphics capabilities are pretty limited. Peep Leap works well, despite those limitations.
I got this to read to the two year old I watch but although the pictures are cute I don't have a fire and so black and white a little less interest grabbing for that age. also the words were impossible to read . So although I would recommend the book I am re thinking getting that kind of thing for my kindle.
This is an absolute must-read for any kid, of any culture, any religion, any race, and from any time. It encourages self-esteem and faith when confronted with first-time situations. Thank you, Elizabeth Verdick, for your inspiration.
