Gr 8 Up{amp}mdash;Isolated and alone, Cicada is bullied, ignored, overworked, and underappreciated during their 17 years of work for a nameless corporation housed in a depressing gray skyscraper. Now that retirement has arrived, Cicada is at a loss, but hidden under Cicada's wrinkled gray suit lies unexpected strength. The spare text is made up of concise sentence fragments, mimicking the Basho haiku included on the closing folio page, and emphasizing Cicada's otherness. Each page features just three lines of text followed by Cicada's rhythmic "Tok Tok Tok!" printed in a simple font on light gray pages. The illustrations, created with oil paints on canvas and paper, are unflinchingly direct. Utilizing a palette of black, white, and gray with just a touch of the green from Cicada's head and handlike legs protruding from vast suit cuffs, light and shadow depict the static, sterile, impersonal corporate world. In some illustrations, repeated shapes seem to represent the incessant repetition of office work. The spreads each feature a vignette showing the humiliation and isolation Cicada has endured for so many years. Shaun Tan has done it again! Such a powerful message in such a simple story. Much like an "ace" in tennis, it looks easy, but its so hard to pull off. Its a story that will resonate with anyone who has worked at a job that has felt unappreciated and a resolution that we all have in us. Just brilliant! Highly recommend this book!!!
This is a short story about a cicada who works in a human corporate building, and feels mistreated and unappreciated.The way the story is painted and the main character are an example of Tan's artistic mastery. I love the grey and green main tones of the story, the wondrous Etcher-like settings, and the awesome atmosphere, something that looks effortlessly easy because Tan is a genius at what he does. The precision of his drawing pen and the artistry of his paintings are totally awesome, as well as his chiaroscuro work. The book has a cinematic feeling to me, too.The story, though, is simplistic, which is understandable as the target readers are both children and adults. As an adult who has read almost everything published by Tan, I feel that the story is a bit sketchy and might not resonate with everyone. That's my case. Yes, for sure I can get the story lesson. I'm sure that it will help children and adults see that one can always escape oppressive circumstances, people and settings and fly away, choose how one lives; however, the way the story is narrated feels a bit lacking to me. I loved it, and would absolutely read it to my kids if I had any but I'm just a a hig fan of Shaun Tan! Really heavy hitting and of substance I think, but I would not recommend this picture book to anyone unwilling to face big questions.
