It was years since I picked up a quality 5 string "long neck" folk banjo. That was when I was a 15 year old kid fascinated by the legendary Kingston Trio! Hey, back then, who wasn't somehow influenced by those guys. Back then it was either Dave Guard or John Stewart or that magic touch with a Vega 5 string banjo. In the first incarnation of the Trio, Guard learned from this book. When he was replaced the young John Stewart, John learned the 5 string from the same book, written by the legend himself, Pete Seeger. To this very day in the year 2018...it's basically the "bible" of how to learn the "basics" of how to play the instrument.Me, I'm 71 now, and found a 5 string long neck an "great" shape with case. I purchased it. The second item on my list was this book. It brought back memories and a lot more. Useful for learners who have a lot of self-discipline and are willing to practice and work hard; but not really a complete self-study course, even with the companion CD and DVD. I'd recommend this book (and the companion CD, which is still available from Smithsonian/Folkways, and the companion DVD from Homespun Tapes) to supplement lessons with a live teacher.Many of the tunes included here are available on YouTube, or elsewhere on the Internet, performed by the old-time artists Seeger mentions in the book. Unfortunately there's not a compilation CD with the original artists, but I imagine you could make a fairly complete playlist on YouTube.Everybody who wants to play the banjo should study this book: just don't expect to rely on that alone, unless you're truly self-disciplined and fanatically dedicated.
Pete Seeger devoted a foreword (dated May 2012) on this book to explain the flaws he felt were unresolved in the original text. It is an older book with some dated material and it’s not really a complete instruction book. A lot of material is presented in a way that makes it seem incomplete. I personally consider it more of a supplement than a method book. I like reading it to get an opportunity to pick Seeger’s mind about how he arranged folk songs. I especially enjoyed the way he explained clawhammer technique and how to hold your hand while playing.I like this book despite its flaws. It has a long history in banjo playing circles and is more like a historical document in this sense. It should be part of any banjo player’s library because it is an interesting read.
This is the way that I started on the banjo. There weren't any other books then. Now there are many, but this one and "The Art of the Mountain Banjo" by Art Rosenbaum try to cover all styles. That is both its strength and weakness. You get off to a good start, but might get bogged down trying to learn so many different ways of playing the banjo. Pete's hand-written revision is charming.
Classic banjo book. My only complaint is that it is printed as though it were handwritten. If you've played a lot of jazz music where handwritten notation is common, this may not bother you, but I imagine a majority of new players will struggle to decipher the text.
I first bought this book around 1980 to teach myself to play my first banjo. I never really got very far, and marriage made for further distractions. Then in 1984 a rental truck fire claimed both my banjo and my book.Fast forward twenty years. I finally replaced my banjo (it just arrived five days ago). I was delighted to find Pete Seeger's book was still in print and available through Amazon, and it arrived a few days ahead of the instrument. I am also using the Janet Davis book and DVD, which is a great tool, but I wouldn't be without Pete Seeger to guide me as well.The main benefit of this book is that Pete covers a wide range of playing styles, and lets the student sample them all. He encourages readers to skip around the book and experiment. This is a far cry from today's banjo books that tend to lock you into one style or another right away.I love the way the book is laid out. It begins with a basic strum in C tuning. This is what I learned many years ago, and it was well suited to simple accompaniment of folk songs. This will have you making useful music in a fairly short time. It moves into more advanced concepts from there.This book isn't slick and polished like modern works. The printing looks amateurish, and the tablature is hand-drawn, as are many illustrations. Photos look like they were made on an old copy machine. But all of this only adds to the book's down-home spirit.Besides teaching technique, Seeger sprinkles the book with music theory, banjo history, and lots of other flavorful items. My favorite is a Peanuts cartoon (I'll let you buy the book to see it.) His writing style is also very friendly and readable, and often quite funny. This may not be your main instructional book, but it is a must have for any banjo student, for it captures the spirit and soul of folk music far better than most books which tend to read like technical manuals.The 2002 edition includes handwritten notes from Pete inside the front and back covers. He indicates that if he had time for a major revision, he would start with G tuning and three-finger picking, where are more in vogue nowdays. He also makes mention that some obsolete addresses of banjo supply and record companies still remain in the text.
