From Publishers Weekly
The daunting emotional challenge of living up to an almost mythically famous parent is the subject of Wiwa's brutally candid memoir, which explores his psychological tug-of-war with his father, Nigerian writer and human rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa. Asking "My father. Where does he end and where do I begin?" Wiwa recalls his troubled childhood growing up in the shadow of a world-renowned man who simultaneously took on a powerful military regime and the mighty Shell Oil conglomerate, only to be executed by the Nigerian dictatorship in November 1995. Writing this book, according to Wiwa, who is now a journalist in Canada, was an attempt to understand the complex bond between his father and himself, a relationship so difficult at times that it compelled him to legally change his name. Resentful at his father's mood swings, absences and infidelities, he was angry at being pressured to continue the older Wiwa's work and legacy until he fully reassessed the man's untiring fight against tyranny. Wiwa's impassioned and detailed memoir provides a superb overview of the Nigerian political landscape, as well as an excellent behind-the-scenes look at his father. In addition to his own story, the concluding segments about other children of prominent human rights heroes Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and Bogoyoke Aung San are revealing and informative. Agents, Bruce Westwood, Westwood Creative Artists, and Derek Johns, AP Watt. (Sept. 1) Forecast: This book is almost certain to attract media attention, given the international celebrity of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the irresistible family angle. Its eloquence promises a wide readership among those who care about international human rights and those who love family memoirs.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Wiwa's complex memoir is both an account of the history, corruption, and politics of modern Nigeria and an inquiring biography of his father, Ken Saro-Wiwa. Saro-Wiwa was a renowned human rights activist and vibrant critic of the Nigerian military dictatorship who was instrumental in publicizing the environmental and human rights abuses of the Shell Oil Company. His 1995 execution by the Nigerian military regime made him an international martyr and a symbol for the Nigerian opposition. While detailing his childhood and his strained relationship with his controversial father, Wiwa vividly portrays the struggle between a traditional way of life in Nigeria and multinational corporate interests. He shows how, in his worldwide appeal for justice for his father, he was able to come to terms with his father's life and execution. This insightful, clearly written work is recommended for those interested in African society and politics, the dangers of environmental pollution by multinational corporations in developing countries, and human rights abuses throughout the world. As someone who followed the tragedy of Ken Saro Wiwa's imprisonment and eventual murder by the Nigerian government with great concern, I was thrilled (like so many I am sure) to know that he had a son with the same name. Clearly, Ken Wiwa was (is) well positioned to follow in his father's footsteps and keep the world informed of the ongoing struggles of the Ogoni and others who reside throughout the Niger Delta region. It remains one of the world's greatest injustices. But doing so is easier said than done. Here, Ken Wiwa speaks of his personal struggles being raised under an unbelievably driven and ambitious man who was not always there for his family. Through his son's words, you can see that Ken Saro Wiwa cared deeply for his children but that his words and actions, including infidelity, were sometimes cutting and misguided. Upon his death, and even prior, the world clamored around his namesake, hoping that he could somehow help inform the world of his father's plight and cause. No doubt the son was (is) very capable. But to be the kind of leader/'saint' to the Ogoni people that his father expected him to be, plus all else, has proven to be very challenging to Ken Wiwa. For starters, the son seems to have a broader view on the world and is aware of the endless options that are available to the young well educated and eloquent young man that he has become. In many ways, his father wanted this of his children - all of them; did he really want them to be educated in the UK and then return to fight for the plight of the Ogoni? And why should a father's wish, even if it is clear (not sure that it is here), trump all else? And as a professor of African area studies I have heard this: why should I take on the troubles of 'my people' or of the world? Why should I, because of my heritage or skin tone, die of heart disease? In the end, it doesn't look like Ken Wiwa is giving up entirely on the cause of the Ogoni. In fact, you will see on youtube.com that he has been interviewed countless times about his father's legacy and the current state of affairs. But you can also see that he has limited patience with the interviewers' thoughtless questions. Of course he misses his father; of course he cares about the ongoing plight of his Ogoni kin...And so on. What comes through these pages is that Ken Wiwa, like his father, is clearly very motivated to have a life of meaning; he does want to make a positive difference in the world. He is just finding his own way.I saw the few problems with the book (flow, remaining typos) as the fault of the editors (which Wiwa graciously thanks); they could have done a better job. The glaring typos (I found ~ 6), in particular, were unfortunate. But, in the end, that matters little. In my mind, writing a book like this must have been a trying and emotional experience. Reading the book - as eloquent as Ken Wiwa is - I had this sense throughout. No doubt that Ken Wiwa loved and admired his father; no doubt that he cares about the plight of the Ogoni. He seems to be getting the institutional support that he needs to pursue his writing and public outreach. Hopefully, that will continue to be case. Let us all hope the best for the Ogoni and all peoples suffering such blatant injustices. Let us never forget the injustice of Ken Saro Wiwa's death and his message. Ken Wiwa, as he must know, is not alone.
An autobiography by a favorite writer, whom I met through his brilliant editorials published in The Globe and Mail many years ago. It illustrates his struggle with his own identity, following in the footsteps of a world renowned activist and poet, Ken Saro Wiwa of Nigeria.
A befitting gift to the memory of a great man from his son. Ken Wiwa has arrived as a major voice of his generation with this sincere and serious work of literature that looks at Nigerain politics and history from the eyes of a Niger Delta son. This is a personal document with a straight forward message.
Ken Wiwa's sense of the past, his love for his family, and his fears and hopes for the future of his homeland, remain the guiding torch of this fascinating book. As the son of the late Ogoni freedom fighter, poet, publisher and businessman, Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was killed by Nigeria's military regime of 1995, Ken Wiwa's diction, sense of nostalgia and worldview, are quite convincing in this debut publication. Themes such as family, childhood, oil exploitation, the plight of the voiceless, and the struggles of ethnic minorities in a country with so much promise, are meticulously covered in this book. This book is a wonderful addition to the ever-growing body of beautiful books written/published today!
A moving and evocative memoir of Ken Wiwa's difficult coming of age, caught between two cultures and the collision with history of his domineering father, Nigerian playwright and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. In effect the story is told in two parts - the author's life up to his father's hanging on trumped up charges in 1995, and his subsequent attempt to come to terms with his fathers ambiguous personal legacy, in part from seeking out the children of other political martyrs such as Nkosinathi Biko and Aung San Suu Kyi. One gets the sense that by the end of the book Wiwa has achieved some sort of closure and establishment of stable, constructive self-identity. Recommended to anyone interested in Nigeria, international diplomacy, or the relationship between fathers and sons.
I was in bed on the morning of the 10th of November 1995 when the death of ken Saro Wiwa was announced over the radio. As it is in Nigeria there is always the official and unofficial news so speculations the previous night dismissed as rumours...even though i was almost twenty at this time, it dawned on me that i knew next to nothing about Mr Saro-Wiwa..and folks made up to many stories that usually left you confused but Ken Wiwa has done an excellent job. He initial presents hiself has a spoilt kid who saw more meaning to life in the west than in Africa his home (Or so i understood it) but as he grows, he matures to the point where he does not only understand his father and what he stands for but learns to forgive and even sympathise with his many dilemas in his struglle to liberate the lifes and minds of his people. The most refreshing thing about the story is that Wiwa Snr and Jnr reach a compromise in what seemed like a stumbling relationship (as it is with many first sons who are similar to thier fathers) and reconcile before Saro-Wiwa dies. I gues like Wiwa snr said "it's a shame we cant choose our parents" but having ready a story like this one I'm quite glad it so too.Bro Ken i agree with your Dad you do have a good style keep the books coming.
I remember where I was the day I found out Ken Saro-Wiwa had been murdered. It's a day that will forever be with me.Ken Wiwa does a beautiful job of honoring his father's human rights work and expressing the complexity of their relationship. It is a shame that Mr. Saro-Wiwa will never be able to see his son's heartfelt tribute.
