Foster Huntington is a photographer and filmmaker from Skamania, Washington. In 2011, he left his fashion job in New York City in 2011 and moved into a camper van. For the next three years he traveled around North America, driving some 120,000 miles, surfing and camping. He began the popular tumblr account and hashtag, van-life.net, in 2011 and self published a book, Home Is Where You Park It, with photos from his time on the road. He now lives in a treehouse in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington and works on short films and photo projects in his studio.

I have been following him online and watching the movement for a few years with much admiration. There is a wealth of knowledge out there and many different people with sites and social media to follow. When you use the medium of a book I have a much higher expectation of depth in the content. Foster is an amazing photographer and has been knee deep in van life for a long time. I bought the book with hopes of learning so much more about the people and the families that have chosen this lifestyle but the book didn’t scratch the surface any more than the blogs that are already out there. I may be wrong but I have this suspicion that people have a deep and interesting life story that brought them to this point and I hope that at some point a book comes out that narrows down on just a half dozen of the van lifers and really tells their story.
I’m so envious of this life! The pictures were beautiful; they not only featured the vans themselves but also the people who own them. Definitely recommend.
Pros: Great Artwork/Pictures. It is a heartfelt piece and I am glad that I bought it. Cons: Not enough information that is really useful and practical.
An enjoyable book to leaf through with beautiful pictures and sections on lots of different sorts of van conversions. I'm not quite ready to abandon my 3-star hotel comfort on the road...but it's lovely to sip coffee in the sun on our veranda and dream.
Liked several stories and how the book is well organized, I wish the pictures were properly set for reading books. In general, this is a good introduction to Van life for someone that’s seriously considering it.
The book was obviously used. Dirty smudges on cover and inside. Disappointing as it was meant to be a gift.
A fun, eye-catching book that makes you want to set out on a grand adventure and satisfy your inner road-dog. :)
