Twenty years have past since the publication of the first edition. During that time arboriculture has experienced significant changes. Research findings; the application, training, and certification of arborists; innovations by practitioners; new and improved equipment and products; a worldwide community of professionals; and a better informed and more concerned public bode well for the future of arboriculture. Instant access to information across the Internet allows for exchange of ideas and experiences among arborists in every part of the globe. The fourth edition of Arboriculture provides approaches to analyzing problems and situations and selecting the most appropriate solutions or courses of action. This is particularly important because local or regional factors require specific solutions. As in previous editions, new information and maintenance practices are evaluated and, where appropriate, current practices reassessed. The analytical approach is emphasized, assessing management needs and deciding on an appropriate solution. The common and botanical names used generally conform to those listed in Hortus Third (Bailey and others, 1976) and the Annotated Checklist of Woody Ornamental Plants of California, Oregon, and Washington (McClintock and Leiser, 1979). Measurements are given in metric units, followed by English equivalents in parentheses. In many situations, approximate values are accurate enough, so conversions between the two systems are rounded for simplicity.

Unless you are involved in the field of arboriculture this book would appear unnecessary. However, I would recommend this book to anyone who deals with trees on a regular basis. Regardless of whether you are reforesting your property or working on a tree farm, this book contains well-researched information that will aid you in many aspects of tree management. Many words and concepts that require schooling or research are used throughout the book. Even a person familiar with arboriculture will find something obscure mentioned in this book. Nevertheless, if you take you time to research unfamiliar words this book will reward you with a plethora of information.I dislike books that contain no color photography. However, in this case I will make an exception for Prof. Harris. This book contains many photographs that will aid the reader in assimilating the information presented. The construction of the book is excellent for bringing outdoors; which makes it ideal for surviving your next tree planting. This arboriculture survival guide will pay for itself with the useful information contained within its semi-glossy pages.

I echo the praise that others have given this book. I am so pleased with the depth of content on such a variety of subjects. I read my copy cover to cover and have continued to refer to it so much that I have almost worn off the front cover. It is a much more detailed reference than the Arborist study guide book. It's clear that the book has been updated to reflect the current best practices but some of the pictures with people are hilarious because of the dated clothes.I would add that the well organized Appendix has led me to some other good books to further my knowledge. One in particular that is referenced heavily is "The Body Language of Trees". I ordered this book and was amazed by the authors ability to communicate difficult biomechanical concepts in simple terms.

This text covers mainly the same topics as the ISA Arborist's Certification Study Guide, but instead of illustrations, there are b&w photos, citations to research, and considerably expanded upon facts. Arboriculture digs deep to provides answers and clues to many pertinent and useful topics for the professional. The book is packed with valuable information derived from many scientific studies including those of Shigo, Pirone, Gilman and many other well know and lesser known tree, plant, soil researchers. The text is very dense but the information is presented in an easy to understand manner. It is a little bit dated though, so I hope a new edition will come out soon that will assess and sort out the many new horticultural products and tools that have come to market since this was written.

Arboriculture is a science and art that is made up of many different contributing factors. This book does a very good job of covering them all. Any one of the chapters could be expanded into a book in itself. This thoroughly researched and written book is for the person who wants all of their information in one place. It is a textbook for the technically minded arborist, tree surgeon, tree farmer, or hobbyist. Don't look for this book to be entertaining or philosophical. Instead, buy this book for the knowledge held within. There is a lot to be learned from it. Every single page is filled with facts, figures, methods, and recommendations. You will find yourself reading every page a second or third time in order to catch it all. I refer back to this book on a regular basis, because there is no way I can remember it all. If you have any questions about the management of trees or shrubs, you will likely find it in this book.

This should be a required text for any Plant Bio or Hort student. An easy to understand scientific approach to arboriculture. It sets a standard that all arborists should follow. It also serves as a great reference for the novice and home gardener alike. This is not a book that just sits on a shelf. My copy is dogeared from use long after the classes and tests have ended.

Long used in the classroom, this book is a must -have for anyone in the industry

As a certified arborist, this book is must for the library reference - more importantly, it is one of my textbooks for teaching at Temple University and for teaching at Longwood Gardens. This is one of the best sources for studying for the certified arborist exam. Buying this book is money well spent. I have two books, one for each of my offices.

Thanks.
