While I have a good bit of mechanical and restoration experience, I'm currently rebuilding a 1962 Jaguar EType roadster, and needed a detailed guide for measuring cam lifts, adjusting timing chains, etc. This book isn't a substitute for hands-on experience, but definitely helps fill in some gaps you might have, especially regarding measurement and tuning specifics. I found the tools section surprisingly helpful too. The attention to detail is very high, and it's written in a very approachable, digestible way.Note that it's pretty much engine only. If you're looking for info to rebuild the whole powertrain, you'll have to turn to other books/resources.
I bought it as a gift for an auto mechanic who love to work on engines. When I showed it to a couple of his auto friends, they all wanted to steal it away...So although he hasn't gotten it yet, I am sure that he is going to LOVE IT!
Great book, always go back to when I stumble across something I haven’t seen tearing apart an engine. New to engine building, but this book.

Written in a clear, concise manner, this book is my favorite from many that I have bought. Even if you think you know it all, buy this book!
Whether you're experienced or you are just getting into engine rebuilds, there's a TON of great information. True, it isn't all super-specific but it does give many pitfalls and lots of excellent advice on general techniques and gotchas as you rebuild your engine. (And certainly provides guidance on things for you to look up and verify for your particular application.)
